Fashion has long flirted with the gym, and this fall the romance becomes a full choreography. Copenhagen favorite Ganni has joined forces with Lululemon for a collection inspired by the dance films of the 1980s.
Launched on October 15, it pairs Lululemon’s technical fabrics with Ganni’s playful spirit, from leopard prints to ruffled trims. Leg warmers and boleros complete the mood, along with cheerful headbands that seem borrowed from a Saturday-night dance class.
“80s dance movies have been part of my life since I was a child,” says Ganni creative director Ditte Reffstrup. She channeled their energy and sense of self-expression into every piece. Under every frill, the brand’s signature Nulu and Softstreme fabrics keep bodies free to move. The result proves that a sports bra can feel as expressive as a party dress.
Jennifer Beals Stars in the Campaign
To front the “Joy Is a Power Move” campaign, the brands called Jennifer Beals, star of Flashdance (1983), and singer-dancer Mette. Set in a dance studio, the short film celebrates movement as self-expression. Fittingly, Beals once revealed that her iconic off-the-shoulder sweatshirt was an old top she had cut open after it shrank in the wash.
The ’80s Dancewear Revival
The early 1980s turned aerobics into a fashion statement. Jane Fonda’s 1982 workout video brought leotards and leg warmers into living rooms across America, while Fame and Flashdance sent them to the movies. Four decades later, that energetic wardrobe feels joyful again, especially when fitness doubles as self-care.
The Key Pieces of the Ganni x Lululemon Collection
A sheer jacquard bodysuit looks ready for both barre class and a night out. Meanwhile, a brushed pullover with a bubble hem meets matching barrel-leg pants, whose adjustable hems play with proportions. Lululemon’s beloved Define Jacket also receives a Ganni makeover, with all the charm of a vintage costume.
Where to Shop Ganni x Lululemon
The 22-piece collection also includes accessories and footwear. Find it at lululemon.com and GANNI.com, as well as in select lululemon and GANNI stores across North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. “What I love about this collection is its use of our technical materials combined with the iconic GANNI style,” says Jonathan Cheung, Lululemon’s global creative director.
How to Wear Ganni x Lululemon
Layer the slouchy pullover over the bodysuit and finish with chunky sneakers. For a playful wink, pull the leg warmers right over them. After class, slip the barrel-leg pants under a long wool coat for an effortless city look. Whatever you choose, every step will feel like the final audition scene, with the music swelling just for you.
