I have… a lot of hair. A lot of it. So much that my mom jokes that one-fourth of my hair is the entirety of hers. My wash days in the past took hours — full 22-episode seasons of length, at times — due to the amount of hair on my head and the fact it’s also thick and coarse, so it takes forever to dry. So when I first got my Dyson Supersonic hairdryer and blowdried my entire head of hair in 30 minutes, it transformed my relationship to my hair. Years of duct taping a comb attachment was solved merely with a magnet, and I always wound up with smooth hair. But even after passing with a flat iron a few times, I’ve learned fast that my natural 4c curls cannot withstand the humidity of a New York summer. Now that fall’s coming, I’m looking forward to wearing my natural hair yet again, and when I do choose to flat iron it — because yes, I too have a very trendy wolf-cut/shag courtesy of Frédéric Fekkai and I plan on showing the world that I look like a Black Princess Diana — I was so happy to hear that Dyson has added a Flyaway Attachment to the Supersonic portfolio to keep my shag looking smooth this fall without having to apply extra heat.

The Flyaway attachment’s main purpose is to smooth those pesky baby hairs that refuse to lay flat. It’s a little peculiar at first glance — it’s shaped like the top part of a question mark — but deeply intuitive in use, and user-friendly.

So meet Dyson’s latest haircare launch: the Flyaway Attachment. The tool rounds out the Supersonic portfolio with technology that helps smooth flyaways for a sleek look, without extreme heat! Whether hair is freshly styled, or is on day three with the help of hair spray and dry shampoo, the Flyaway attachment is the perfect go-to, to help banish stray baby hairs to leave you looking polished.

The Flyaway Attachment harnesses the Coanda effect — the same “optimum curve” design that was first engineered for the Dyson Airwrap styler — in order to lift longer hairs into the top and front while also pushing flyaways down. In a classic Dyson fashion, the brand’s engineers collected “in excess of 1.14 billion individual pieces of professional styling data, captured from over 10,000 hours of professional stylist trials, observing more than 420 stylists across 80 salons around the world.” The Flyaway attachment isn’t just a momentary help, it also can have long-term benefits — avoiding final extra passes with a flat iron at a high heat can be damaging, causing more flyaways, and this attachment’s goal is to avoid that issue.

“Our engineers are driven to rethink convention and our obsession with airflow led us to push the potential of Coanda after observing how stylists use a ‘brush and blow dryer’ technique to smooth flyaways,” explains Emma Sheldon, Dyson Hair Care Category Director, in a statement shared to GRAZIA. “Traditionally, this skilled technique involves the stylist using a round brush to section and manage the hair, whilst directing airflow from the dryer to push the flyaways into the style and out of sight. We set out to find a way to innovate a way to mechanize this method for the everyday styler. The new Dyson Flyaway Attachment harnesses the phenomenon of Coanda to smooth flyaways out of sight, without exposing the hair to extreme heat damage.”

Unfortunately, there’s some bad news – the Flyaway attachment, when sold on its own, is sold out. The attachment, along with the four other tools — styling concentrator, diffuser, gentle dryer, and wide tooth comb — are now sold with the Dyson Supersonic, so if you’re dying to get one, that’s a… can we call that a life hack? It’s something, that’s for sure. But if you’re patient, get on the waitlist and fly, fly away free.
