Unexpected Sweater Trends
Goodbye Plain Knits, Here Are the 5 Unexpected Sweater Trends Taking Over Fall 2026

Logos, flowers, crochet and the return of the V-neck: knitwear just got a lot more interesting. The plain gray crewneck is a fall staple for a reason. It goes with everything and never feels wrong. But it rarely feels exciting either, and this season, designers are making a strong case for sweaters with a little more personality.

Elle has identified five sweater trends taking over this fall, many of them spotted on the spring/summer 2027 runways in New York, Milan and Paris, which suggests they will last well beyond one season.

1. Graphic and Logo Pullovers

Logos are back, but in a relaxed way. Tory Burch paired a charcoal logo sweater with a bold, colorful skirt, while Tommy Hilfiger styled its version with easy denim or shorts, according to Elle. The effect is preppy and sporty rather than flashy.

Try it with a midi skirt in a strong color or with straight jeans and loafers. Tommy Hilfiger’s waffle-knit logo sweater costs $97, and Tory Burch’s logo crewneck $175.

2. The Crewneck, With a Twist

The classic crewneck is not disappearing. It is just getting smarter details. Loewe showed a slightly cropped, heavyweight knit with a tiny red-thread logo, while Stella McCartney’s ocean-blue sweater featured whale motifs. A cropped shape works especially well with high-waisted trousers or skirts.

3. Floral Motifs

Flowers are moving from dresses to knitwear. Stine Goya’s Henley came with yellow pansies, and Monse’s cropped crewneck had a tulip stem winding around the neckline, Elle notes. Ganni and Erdem offer their own floral knits for fall.

Keep the rest of the outfit simple: dark jeans, a plain skirt or tailored trousers let the motif shine.

4. Lightweight V-Necks

The V-neck is having a comeback. At Tod’s in Milan, it was layered over a contrasting button-down, while Sandy Liang in New York showed it on its own in soft pastels. It is the most office-friendly trend of the five, and Gap’s CashSoft oversized V-neck, at $70, is an easy entry point.

Layering a striped or white shirt underneath, with the collar out, gives the most polished result.

5. Unexpected Textures

For those who want something truly different, texture is the answer. Prada showed checkered knits, Brandon Maxwell and Michael Kors used rivet-punched details, and Bottega Veneta and Brunello Cucinelli offered crochet and open-stitch styles in oversized cuts, according to Elle.

Open-knit sweaters look best layered over a fitted tank or a slip dress, so the texture shows without too much exposure.

How to Choose

You do not need all five. Pick the one that matches how you dress: a logo or V-neck for an easy, everyday look, a floral or textured knit if you want a statement. Then wear it with what you already own.

Care matters too. Fold heavier knits instead of hanging them so they keep their shape, and wash crochet and open-stitch pieces by hand or in a mesh bag to avoid snags.

Plain knits will always have a place, but this fall, the most stylish sweater in the room is the one with a detail people notice.
