Zac Efron is ready to set the record straight on those rampant plastic surgery rumours. In a new interview with Men’s Health, the actor revealed that his sudden change in appearance – which shocked fans last year, causing many to speculate that he’d had plastic surgery to widen his jaw, as well as Botox and fillers – was actually due to a four-year-old injury that shattered his jaw and left his “chin bone hanging off his face”.

The star claimed that the major injury was a result of him slipping in his socks at home and smacking his face against a granite corner of a fountain. Efron said part of his recovery involves working with a physical therapist to correct muscle damage in his masseters, which he took time off from during his recent stint in Australia – hence the changing jawline. Without the therapy, the star says, “The masseters just grew… They just got really, really big.”

Efron also opened up in the interview about his body, which saw the star adopt a rigorous training and diet schedule to maintain an implausibly fit physique. He admitted that filming for Baywatch back in 2017 caused lasting issues for his body, including trouble sleeping and depression.

“I started to develop insomnia,” he told the publication, “and I fell into a pretty bad depression, for a long time. Something about that experience burned me out. I had a really hard time recentering. Ultimately they chalked it up to taking way too many diuretics for way too long, and it messed something up.”

Efron said that time off in Australia during the pandemic changed his mindset, altering his approach to fitness in a much healthier way. “That Baywatch look, I don’t know if that’s really attainable. There’s just too little water in the skin. Like, it’s fake; it looks CGI’d,” he said. “And that required Lasix, powerful diuretics, to achieve. So I don’t need to do that. I much prefer to have an extra, you know, 2 to 3 percent body fat.”

But when it comes to speculation on social media about his appearance, the Gold star isn’t wasting any time worrying. “If I valued what other people thought of me to the extent that they may think I do, I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this work,” he stated.
