Given two years of glitchy virtual awards ceremonies and travel restrictions I will admit that we underestimated the forthcoming glitz and glamour of the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Instead viewers were treated to pre-pandemic scales of guest lists and energy – sans the face mask requirement outside the event – with the likes of Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman, Will Smith and Reese Witherspoon all in attendance at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

As a peer-nominated awards, the SAGs are often devoid from claims of racism, sexism and conspiracy like the Golden Globes and Grammys have faced in recent years. All in all, it is a celebration of fellow stars and on-screen colleagues and the vibes were high this evening. Inside the annual soirée, history was made.

Troy Kotsur was honoured with the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for CODA, becoming the first deaf actor to win a solo SAG. Korean-born series Squid Game was a leader on the winners list with Lee Jung-jae who was catapulted to stardom for his lead role won Best Male Actor in a Drama Series and HoYeon Jung (who wore Louis Vuitton for the event) won Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. Elsewhere, Jessica Chastain won the award for Female Actor in a Leading Role for a Motion Picture.

Meanwhile Nicole Kidman will present Helen Mirren with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
