Trends. They come. They go. They persist – even when we don’t want them to. This one however, we are savouring with delight. Welcome to the gang, coloured mascara.

A playful swerve away from classic black, lashes were getting coated in kaleidoscopic hues backstage. The lash wand looked to be dipped into a rainbow; magenta, periwinkle, aubergine, chocolate.

A funky rendition of ’80s and ’90s eye classics, it was a jubilant step away from the ‘no-makeup’ mantra of many shows.

“Coloured mascara is happening. A lot of people are playing around with colours and it’s easier than doing a big eye. Mascara doesn’t take any skill.

Noted M.A.C Senior Artist, Nicole Thompson, who at Alice McCall was chunking up lashes in aubergine, a colour that suits just about everyone. “Aubergine is one of those magic colours that manages to make a green, blue, brown eye look really clear and clean. It’s a really special colour, it looks good on everyone.”

At Double Rainbouu, Nigel Stanislaus, was lacquering lids in acid brights, making for one of the most memorable makeup moments of the week. Maybelline Colour Jolt was applied to lashes with a dry Spooler brush, a zingy option full of youth.

But you needn’t be cut from an only glamorous cloth, with a softer, refined take on the trend also apparent. At Sass & Bide, Lancome’s Lara Srokowski brushed a chocolate brown through the lashes of the blonde models, keeping the guise natural.

“Brown mascara is one of my favourite tricks actually.”

“I like to use brown because it’s softer. My trick is black on the top and always brown underneath, so it keeps the focus on the top lashes and maximising them, and softens the bottom look,” notes Lara.

“Sometimes when you put black underneath it’s too overpowering, depending on the eye shape, but if I’m doing a lip I’ll do black and a subtle brown. Or grey, really looks nice too. For someone more mature, you would never use brown, because it would make the white in their eye look really yellow. If they’re more mature, grey makes their eye look whiter.”

Time to play.
