Dame Vivienne Westwood, the legendary British fashion designer has died in London at the age of 81.

As per a statement released on Instagram, Westwood died “peacefully, surrounded by her family” in Clapham on Thursday, 29th December, 2022.

“Vivienne continued to do the things she loved, up until the last moment, designing, working on her art, writing her book, and changing the world for the better,” the statement continued. “She led an amazing life. Her innovation and impact over the last 60 years has been immense and will continue into the future.”

Andreas Kronthaler, Westwood’s husband and creative collaborator, also shared a tribute via Twitter.

“I will continue with Vivienne in my heart,” the designer shared. “We have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with. Thank you darling.”

At this stage, a cause of death has not been shared.

Westwood was best known for her prolific influence in the fashion industry, specifically the genesis of the 1970s punk movement.

Affectionately referred as the ‘Godmother of Punk’, the designer will no doubt leave a lasting legacy on the industry she loved so much.
