Perhaps unsurprisingly (given our mass retreat indoors this year) the velour tracksuit has made a serious comeback in 2020. Dua Lipa wore a lime green version; Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian reprised their iconic 2006 paparazzi moment and Timothee Chalamet gave Juicy Couture a nod in a photo shoot with GQ. Now, Irina Shayk is getting in on the action—proving that head-to-toe velour can be surprisingly sexy.
The Russian supermodel was spotted in New York City yesterday afternoon, wearing a grey velour get-up from Kim Kardashian’s SKIMS line. She paired the look with a zebra print bag by cult-y Instagram label By Far, knee-skimming leather high-heeled boots and layers of gold necklaces.
Shayk’s take on the original Noughties velour tracksuit is ultra-modern, switching the usual bubblegum pink beloved by the likes of Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez, and switching it for a super-chic shade of ash. Plus, the tapered design of the SKIMS pieces—cropped vest tops, shrunken jackets—throw off any remaining ‘Von Dutch-and-Ugg-boots’ connotations.
We’ve seen a Noughties resurgence elsewhere in the fashion industry too. Matthew Williamson’s debut for Givenchy in September featured the polarising ‘exposed thong’; Emily Ratajkowksi is wearing ugg boots and models like Bella Hadid are embracing the super low-rise jean. Are we ready to treat back into the murky sartorial waters of the 00s again? My mind is telling me no, but Irina Shayk is telling me yes.
