There are many times when a brow appointment just isn’t on the cards, as evidenced by the global pandemic. But even when we aren’t subjected to lockdowns or restrictions, it can still be tricky to fit in regular salon visits. So if you’re finding yourself in desperate need of a top-up with your tint, find reassurance in the fact that you can DIY the entire thing and tint your brows at home.
Thankfully one of the beauty industry’s leading arch angels, Amy Jean Linnehan, recently shared a simple step-by-step tutorial on how to tint your brows at home. Linnehan – who has her own collection of AMY JEAN Brows products stocked globally and runs her eponymous brow salons across Australia – curated an at-home brow tint kit to help her clients maintain their colour at home.
The first step, according to Linnehan’s Instagram tutorial, is to pull the hair away from the face and cleanse your brows of any makeup and oil. Next it’s time for a tidy-up – tweeze away any stray hairs to ensure you get the final shape looking perfect. Then Linnehan uses Vaseline to trace around the outline of the brows, which prevents any errant tint from sticking to the skin. Just be careful not to get any Vaseline on the actual hair of the brow, or you’ll risk a patchy end result.
Now for the fun part – it’s time to mix your tint! Take your chosen tint and squeeze it into a mixing tray. Add some of the accompanying activator liquid and swirl it together thoroughly. Take an angled brow brush (not a spoolie) and place it into the tint mixture, then apply it delicately through the arch and tails of the brow, as this is where you want the darker colour.
Be sure to apply it to the hair and the skin for the best coverage. As you’re close to finishing up, brush the last of the tint through your inner brow for a natural look. If you mess up, simply clean up your mistake with a cotton tip, which comes with the Amy Jean kit. Trace the outline of your brows twice to ensure that the shape is perfect, then leave on to process – leave on 1-2 minutes for a subtle tint, or 4-5 minutes for a deeper look.
Then simply remove the tint with a baby wipe and brush your brows up with a spoolie and marvel at your fresh arches! Of course, you can do this yourself with any brow tinting product, but we love that the Amy Jean DIY Brow Tint Kit comes with everything you need, including tweezers, a brush, the tint itself and baby wipes and a spoolie to mitigate any potential mess.
