If you’re a beauty devotee, you’ve likely heard of the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant ($30). It’s been around since 1930 when Ms Arden herself formulated the product as a skin-soothing salve, and quickly became a global phenomenon that’s seen the product win endless awards.
While it’s been a favourite of makeup artists and beauty editors alike for decades, it’s now gaining momentum on TikTok. Famed for its multi-purpose ability, TikTok creators have started sharing their newfound obsession with the occlusive formula, which does everything from calm sunburn to nourish cuticles and heal callouses.
Some of the Eight Hour Cream’s most popular use on TikTok is as the final step in a ‘slugging’ routine. The skincare trend – which involves layering a thick, occlusive moisturiser that contains petrolatum – might be new to this generation of social media users, but dermatologists have been recommending the technique for years.
Using a product with petrolatum is said to create a barrier over the skin, locking in all the skincare underneath and leaving the complexion looking soft, smooth and impossibly glowy the next morning. But the Eight Hour Cream also doubles as a highlighter over the top of your skincare or makeup, as skincare aficionado Roj Torabi (aka The Roject) demonstrated in a recent video.
It’s also easily mixed with other products to make even better use of its hydrating properties. As TikTok creator @jacinta_spencer revealed in a viral video, you can also use the Eight Hour Cream to turn your favourite lipstick into a gloss, or mix it with raw sugar to create a lip scrub that gently exfoliates a chapped pout.
Fans have also used it to add gloss to freshly-curled lashes and to shape the brows for a lifted, laminated look. Obsessed is accurate!
