And so it’s time to see out 2018. To celebrate it, farewell it, good-riddance it, however you feel about the year that was, new year’s eve is the perfect excuse to dress up, kick back and pop open the good Champagne. There are a few ways to ensure a great new year’s eve, mostly by heeding the advice of NYE’s past. The first is: remember that an evening hunting down fireworks can often end up being only about crowds, queues and fretting about how you’ll get home. The second is: committing to more than one event is a surefire way to a stressed, sweaty self, likely counting down to midnight in the back of an Uber. The third is: plan your look. A great outfit you’re totally feeling will mean you can be the 2018 party princess you deserve to be.
So, in the spirit of the annual worldwide frock-up, we’re counting down the Top 10 best celebrity party looks of 2018. This year, party style has been about super-glam, metallics, disco-shimmering and bold statements that require total style commitment. ‘Twas not the year to be shy! Hurrah 2018, you brought us colour and shapes we never knew we needed. Take inspiration from the women who tried, tested and succeeded this year.

Who will take out number 1?
10. JLo bringing hot pink fever
There’s no denying that 2018 was the year JLo reinvented herself. Again. She turned 49, somehow got younger and absolutely brought it in the style stakes. She owned every red carpet she attended and summoned the kween attention she deserves. Coming in a number 10 is the fuchsia Giambattista Valli tulle explosion she wore to the NYC premiere of her film Second Act. While a metres-long, pink train might be OTT for your night out with the girls this NYE, we’re taking heed of the spectacular colour. Pair a fuchsia frock with simple hair and a golden fake tan. Yes.
9. Gigi hadid in astronaut-chic
To be honest Gigi chilled a bit more in 2018 (respect). Her best looks were chic dressed-down ensembles, however when she needed to, the older Hadid sister still smashed the glam factor. Our pick? When she wore this part disco-ball, part space-chic Paco Rabanne asymmetrical dress to the Daily Front Row awards in New York in September. This has NYE written all over it.
8. dua lipa in puff sleeves and polka dots
One of the break out music stars of 2018, Dua Lipa introduced us to both her impressive pipes and fashion prowess. Her distinct femme-come-street aesthetic gave license to wear cute-as-button get-ups when just chilling downtown. The polka dot Marianna Senchina two-piece she rocked in June 2018 was our favourite. Perfect for new year festivities…even if our post-Christmas abs aren’t quite Lipa-looking.
7. Hailey Bieber in micro mesh
Before she became Mrs Bieber in November, Hailey Baldwin was (supposedly) still a single girl all the way back in April. Photographed leaving Gigi Hadid’s birthday party in New York with bestie, model Joan Smalls, Baldwin looked every bit the glittering girl in the city…even if perhaps she was feeling a little dusty already. Metallic mesh became a reinvented fabric this year, sometimes with lining, sometimes not. We’ll opt for a slip, but if you’re feeling brave just go with underwear. Be sure to know your party crowd though…
6. Emily Ratajkowski in bed-shirt chic
The white shirt continued world domination in 2018, as did Emily Ratajkowski. The actress and model not only made waves for her signature skin-baring couture but also for her public support of the women’s rights movement, one event even seeing her arrested for her involvement in a protest. One of our favourite looks on Emrata, as she’s Intagrammably known, this year was her sexy take on the spring 2018 Jacquemus white shirt dress paired with the sculpural heels by the same designer. A look perfect for a post-beach holiday NYE bash.
5. Kendall Jenner in marigold magic
The statement colour of 2018 would definitely have to have been marigold. Not since Michelle Williams wore THAT dress on the 2006 Oscars red carpet have we seen quite the infiltration of mustard-yellow frockery. It’s not hard to see why. Marigold is a showstopper. Worn as a gown or a top or a party dress a la Ms Jenner, this colour is timeless and beautiful. If you have a dash of yellow’s chic cousin in your wardrobe consider it with a red lip and a high heel this NYE.
4. Rihanna taking home the gold
Well, we haven’t put her in first place but RiRi is still gold in gold. At the Ocean’s 8 premiere in London in June the singer wrapped herself in a dress from Poiret’s autumn/winter 2018 collection. Like a delicious, expensive piece of golden alfoil, this look instantly made us make NYE mental notes. It’s now high time to down a Champagne looking like a trillion bucks. RiRi-style.
3. Bella in that burnt orange Pucci
It’s true that the effect of Bella Hadid’s stepping out in this ruched, figure-hugging Pucci dress was further ascended by having bestie Kendall Jenner next to her in a matching hue. However, it was Hadid’s dress that sent the fashion-sphere into a spin. Was it the fact it hugged her figure with no holds barred or the fact she seems to be bringing back the 90s nipple? Most likely it was this dress’s unique ability to be insanely sexy without being traditionally revealing. Hot damn glam.
2. Michelle Obama in the boots that broke the internet
By December 20, 2018 seemed to be closing its curtains. Finale finished, applause sounding and key players taking their bows. When, suddenly BAM! We were hit with an unexpected, mind-blowing encore in the form of Michelle Obama wearing knee high Balenciaga boots to her New York book launch. It broke all of the socials, with major fashion players bowing down to her killer style choice, wearing them like it was just no. big. deal. Paired with a slinky wrap dress (also by Balenciaga), the former First Lady of The United States managed to show-up former First Lady of Fashion, SJP, who was interviewing her. What did we learn from this? Even if your party might not quite be a sequinned-boots type affair…wear the sequinned boots. Be the Michelle Obama in the room.
1. Bella Hadid in this dress. That’s all.
And the winner is Bella. Look, we know “naked” dress are not for everyone. Likely, not for many people at all. However, this Julien Macdonald plunging halter-neck masterpiece is probably exactly what you’d wear if you’d just walked the Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Which she had. The combination of the glimmering silver fabric, the jade earrings, the diamond necklace and the sleek high pony-tail is just a hands-down winner. Bella Hadid wore more winning looks this year than anyone else, so of course she is taking out first place. We can’t wait to see what she brings in 2019. Happy NYE everyone, try a plunging halter in a shade of disco ball. It’ll make it one to remember.
