It seems Thierry Mugler is on board with haute-de-nostaliga at the moment. The 70-year-old French designer has been making headlines over the past week not for his latest collections but rather for the re-establishing of some of his vintage pieces.

Cardi B started this grand Mugler moment last week on the red carpet at The Grammy’s when she wore the iconic Venus sheath dress from his 1995 couture collection. The award-winning rapper also wore an outrageous black organza peacock jumpsuit from the same collection during her performance on the night. Cardi attended Mugler’s ready-to-wear show in Paris last September, so perhaps she’d had this idea on the burner since then.

Yesterday, she took to Instagram to thank the designer and point out just how exclusive the Grammy’s dress was. Via video message she said “I want to thank you for choosing me, choosing Cardi, for me to wear your pieces that you don’t lend to nobody.”

Well…until today.

Never one to miss out on a moment, Kim Kardashian must have cried out to her stylist/mother/Kanye that she too wanted a vintage Mugler, because tonight in Los Angeles, the soon-to-be mother of four stepped out in a walking headline. Borrowed from Mugler’s 1998 couture collection the dress is quintessential to his sexy boundary-pushing looks of the 80s and 90s (it was also he who designed the similar black dress Demi Moore wore in the film Indecent Proposal).

A little awkward for Cardi, but actually neither of these sightings were isolated Mugler-muse moments. He famously loaned his metallic Barbarella-esque unitards of 1992 to Beyonce for her I Am… world tour in 2009 (as well as designing many of her costumes). And as recently as November last year, Rita Ora wore a Mugler vintage gown to the Evening Standard Theatre Awards in the UK.

So, the jury’s out on whether Kimmy and Cardi are having a Mugler-off or whether we’re seeing the beginnings of an unexpected vintage Mugler trend (the designer will be showing his autumn/winter collection in Paris next week and is opening a costume exhibition in Montreal in early March) but we’re certain that Cardi might have been a little miffed upon seeing Kim Kardashian’s pictures today.
