With the number of streaming services currently available at the click of a button, it can get quite overwhelming when it comes to choosing a Friday or Saturday night flick. But the chances of you missing that underrated new TV series – or perhaps an all-time classic film –  are also very high.

And if your Netflix algorithm hasn’t been curated to really suit your viewing needs, you might as well put free-to-air on.

So, here to shine a light on those TV series and films that get lost amongst the pack, the team at ICON have done a little digging to find a list of must-watch shows and films on Netflix right now. No exceptions, grab the popcorn and tuck in for a night of classic binge viewing.

1917

An absolute showstopping, heartbreaking, action-packed film from beginning until end, the Academy award-winning war drama ‘1917’ from director Sam Mendes (Skyfall) documents the seemingly impossible journey two British soldiers must make, crossing over into enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 of their fellow comrades from being killed. Based on true events, this hard-hitting, emotional and captivating film is a technical feat, capturing the brutality of World War One like never before seen.

The Dawn Wall

If you can’t stand heights, this documentary might not be for you. The Dawn Wall captures the epic feat of legendary free climber Tommy Caldwell who tries to forget the heartbreak and hardship he has suffered by being the first man to scale the Dawn Wall of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. In what transcends conventional sports documentaries, The Dawn Wall offers viewers a portrait into the life of Caldwell who defies all odds and conquers personal limitations in a way perhaps never seen before. A must-watch!

Daredevil

Whilst now seven years old, Marvel’s Daredevil is as relevant as ever thanks to Matt Murdoch’s cameo appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, perhaps signaling a bigger role for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in future MCU films. Gritty, dramatic and violent, Daredevil isn’t for the fainthearted. But once you watch one episode, you will binge all three seasons immediately… trust us!

Power of the Dog

Whilst relatively new to Netflix, this recent Golden Globe-winning psychological drama might not have featured on the Netflix trending list, but it set a new record for the streaming service as the most ‘Best Picture’ award wins for any movie on Netflix. Benedict Cumberbatch is phenomenal, Kirsten Dunst gives the performance of her career and Australia’s own Kodi Smit-McPhee is simply brilliant, picking up a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor earlier this month.

The Dish

An Aussie classic that seriously doesn’t get enough recognition, this feel-good classic highlights the true story of a group of eccentric Australian scientists who are responsible for manning a satellite dish located on a remote Australian sheep farm that provided the world with the first footage of man’s first steps on the moon. A colourful cast led by acting great Sam Neill made this film an instant (Aussie) classic.

The Lost Daughter

Released at the end of 2021 to much acclaim, The Lost Daughter is garnering serious Oscar buzz thanks to its initial rave reviews… and you can now watch it yourself! This psychological drama from writer-director Maggie Gyllenhaal unites a brilliant cast to tell the story of a lone traveller who becomes consumed with a young mother and daughter relationship at the local resort. Watching the relationship unfold whilst on her seaside vacation, the protagonist, played by Olivia Colman, becomes overwhelmed with her own memories of family trauma and early motherhood. A stellar cast (including Dakota Johnson) and a suspenseful plotline, add The Lost Daughter to your list.

Manifest

In 2018, Manifest was set to be one of the biggest television series to hit our screens. A show that had serious LOST vibes, Manifest lasted three seasons before it was canned by NBC in 2021 due to poor ratings. Only, Netflix saw its potential and decided to buy the rights for the first two seasons. Within months, the show’s popularity skyrocketed. It now is listed as the top trending TV show on the streaming service right now. This supernatural series centers around the passengers on board Flight 828 who travel from Jamaica to New York, only to find that when they land, authorities explain that five years have passed while they were in the air.  Like we said, massive LOST vibes here…
