The reports of Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn’s break up after six years of dating couldn’t have come at a more high-profile time for Swift, who’s currently entertaining stadiums full of fans every night during the first run of her Eras Tour in the US — a tour Alwyn has been notably absent from since the beginning.

Though the singer hasn’t publicly commented on the reports of the split, she has been hinting in her signature way of how she’s doing, including changing set lists at her shows — most notably, a Arlington, Texas concert, replacing ‘Invisible String’, a song about fate bringing two people together, with ‘The 1’, a breakup song — and, now, using her first social outing to drop more ‘Easter Eggs.’

On Monday night, Swift was photographed out in New York City for dinner with friends including Jack Antonoff, Margaret Qualley and Jennifer Lawrence. For the evening, the group chose to head to Via Carota in the West Village, which happens to be a four-minute walk from Cornelia Street where Swift lived during the early stages of her romance with Alwyn.

Lyrics from her song “Cornelia Street” from the album Lover, which is widely believed to be about their early courtship, reads, “And I hope I never lose you, hope it never ends / I’d never walk Cornelia Street again / That’s the kinda heartbreak time could never mend.” However, Swift appeared to be more than happy heading back to the neighbourhood — and very close to that exact street — despite their split.

Furthermore, Swifties noticed the outfit she was wearing could be made up of clues, too.

Though at first glance, she’s in a low-key outfit consisting of a black top and Area denim jeans, adding a sparkly Paco Rabanne bag and black Mary Jane heels by Sam Edelman to take the look from day to night, the butterfly embellishment on her jeans stood out to fans. A butterfly, they noted online, is not only a symbol of rebirth, but the way it’s bejewelled many are taking as a reference to Swift’s Midnights song “Bejeweled” about her finding her shine again after the end of a relationship.

Swift hasn’t commented on the reports of her and Alwyn’s split. But a source told People that part of what made her realise they weren’t the right long-term match was the trouble he had with her levels of fame. “Joe has struggled with Taylor’s level of fame and the attention from the public,” the source said. “The differences in their personalities have also become harder to ignore after years together. They’ve grown apart.”

“Taylor didn’t see them working out in the long run,” the source added, but assured Swift is doing fine. “They are friendly. She doesn’t have anything bad to say about Joe,” they said. “They just grew apart. Taylor is staying very focused on her tour right now. There is a lot of respect still between them.”
