Suki Waterhouse has shared details of her “dark and difficult” breakup with Bradley Cooper for the first time since their split nine years ago. The multi-hyphenate ‘It’ girl dated the actor-director between 2013 and 2015.
Opening up in a recent profile interview, the new mother has touched on the way her relationships with “men older and more famous than her” shaped her and inspired some of her most moving heartbreak ballads. Waterhouse revealed her emotional 2016 single “Brutally” was written and recorded during a time when she was “so, so sad” and at a point where she “never thought I’d be ok again”.
Yet, nearly nine years on from the heartache, Waterhouse, 32, feels she’s finally gotten past the pain.
“I really will say that I’m pretty strong at this point,” she says.
“When something very public happens to you and the story behind it is dark and difficult, and you’re actually not doing well, and you can’t explain yourself to the world, that’s very isolating and disorientating,” she continues. “It probably has taken a decade to work myself out and actually be able to have this expansion in my life.”
Waterhouse also noted she wouldn’t have believed anybody if they told her then what her life would look like now: about to release her sophomore album, Memoir Of A Sparklemuffin, a star of one of the biggest television shows, Daisy Jones And The Six, a mother to her “angel” baby girl and in a happy relationship with fellow British actor, Robert Pattinson.
“Your twenties are pretty sadistic,” she says. “The love I experienced [then] was only ever a fetishisation, and I think when you only get loved in that way, you only get punished. When you get into your 30s you’re almost instantly afforded a little bit more respect. It’s kind of delightful and shocking at the same time.”
Cooper is said to have ended their relationship, with a source revealing the Maestro’s star’s desire to have kids caused him to break up with Waterhouse as she reportedly wanted to “concentrate on her acting career before becoming a mum”. Cooper went on to date supermodel Irina Shayk and the couple welcomed a daughter in 2017.
Waterhouse gave birth to her daughter in March 2024 after keeping her pregnancy a secret. She headlined Coachella soon after her baby’s arrival and her candid postpartum update. In the interview, Waterhouse revealed that she and Pattinson intentionally tried for a baby.
“One day we looked at each other and said, ‘Well, this is as ready as we’re going to be,” she explains.
Waterhouse and Pattinson haven’t shared their baby’s name or touched on engagement rumours, though she is wearing a diamond ring on that finger in the interview’s accompanying images.
