Matildas captain Sam Kerr is taking her relationship with American footballer, Kristie Mewis, into overtime. After teasing their engagement in the months that followed the nation-stopping FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament, the soccer players have taken to social media to share intimate photos from the moment Kerr popped the question.
In the post, Kerr bent on one knee to ask the midfielder to spend the rest of her life with her. As we know from reports that emerged earlier this month, Mewis answered with a resounding ‘yes’.
What we didn’t know until now, however, is exactly when the striker proposed to her long-term girlfriend.
Kerr and Mewis cleared up any speculation about the timeline by confirming their date in the caption of their post: “September 1st”.
Close-up photos of Mewis’ engagement ring reveal that Kerr opted for a contemporary traditional ring for the 32-year-old. Kerr proposed with a shining oval-cut diamond ring with a prong setting on a gold band.
As soccer fans would be aware, the date came less than two weeks after the Matildas’ loss to Sweden in the third-place qualifying round of the recent World Cup. Mewis’ World Cup tournament concluded early in the championship after the US also lost to Sweden in the first round.
Mewis and Kerr shared a romantic pitch-side moment the day after the US’ loss, with Kerr embracing Mewis over the stadium’s barricade.
The moment rivalled their viral public debut as a couple at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where Mewis was seen comforting Kerr on the field after Australia lost to the US in the bronze medal match. Mewis confirmed the engagement on November 9, a few weeks before taking the private exchange public.
At the time, Mewis described Kerr as having “just been everything” before adding, “my biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics”.
Kerr and Mewis have not shared any details of their upcoming wedding, but it’s expected the pair will just be as open with the planning of the nuptials as they have been with other elements of their relationship.
Kerr and Mewis currently operate long-distance, with Kerr based in London where she plays for Chelsea F.C. Mewis, on the other hand, lives in New Jersey where she plays for NJ/NY Gotham F.C.
