Until recently, the realms of fashion and football have been spheres where never the twain shall meet. Yet, both fields understand the power a sartorial uniform can hold—the gravitas that a trademark style possesses. Though the green and gold kits sported by the Matildas during playtime are global signifiers of their athletic ability, both football and fashion fanatics should prepare to become well acquainted with a new print: Matildas pinstripe.

Off the field, Sydney-based luxuriate BEARE PARK has designed a suite of custom formalwear for the Tillies’ ceremonial proceedings. And with the Matildas’ triumph over the Chinese Taipei propelling the Australian national women’s soccer team through to the third round of the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament, it’s only a matter of time before this sleek, two-toned black wool suit makes its way out of the changing room.

BEARE PARK’s creative director and co-founder Gabriella Pereira has already begun warming the legions of Matildas supporters up to the team’s formal uniform, with her attendance at the games a showcase of the brand’s masterful tailoring, sumptuous draping and refined shirting.

By the time the Matildas’ friendly two-game tournament with Canada rolls around in December next year, the sea of fans in the stadium will no longer be sporting the teal and yellow jerseys worn by the team on the pitch. Instead, the crowd will be a wash in black, double-breasted blazers with the formalwear now available for purchase.

As unveiled in a new campaign featuring players including Matildas’ captain Sam Kerr, Mackenzie ‘Brick Wall’ Arnold and Mary Fowler—who made a stellar goal in the nail-biting penalty shoot-out against France in the FIFA Women’s World Cup penultimate semi-final match.

Combining tactical elegance with technical prowess, the suit is equally sophisticated as it is versatile, meaning it can be dressed up and down for both feminine and masculine approaches to styling. The formalwear uniform features a double-breasted blazer, longline suit pants and mid-rise, knee-grazing shorts.

For fashion enthusiasts, the BEARE PARK tailoring is designed, cut, and sewn by hand in Sydney, crafted from 100% Australian Merino Wool woven in the Biella region of northern Italy. (Renowned for its production of the world’s highest quality wool cloth.)

Speaking on the appointment of BEARE PARK as the official formalwear fitter for the Matildas, Pereira notes the collaboration is “our proudest milestone for the brand to date”.

“We are honoured to have been selected to create custom suiting for the Matildas – a group who embody the core values of our women-led, designed, and managed brand,” she adds. “The gravity of this appointment is not lost on us – to celebrate and support these iconic athletes and role models on a global stage is both surreal and career-defining. We cannot wait to cheer them on to victory.”

Neither can we, in BEARE PARK x Matilda suits, of course. Ahead of Matildas’ next game, shop the new formalwear uniform below.
