Good morning to everyone and especially Ryan Gosling as a Ken doll. Overnight Warner Bros. Pictures released a first look at the actor’s character who will star alongside Margot Robbie as Barbie. While we were treated to a first look at the actress’ transformation during CinemaCon in April, this next unveiling is far more polarising.

The appearance of director Greta Gerwig’s Ken was highly discussed on social media with the filmmaker choosing the kind of Ken who looks like he stepped straight out of Venice Beach. He’s tan, like really tan with bleach blonde hair (is that you Pete Davidson?!) an eight pack and wearing a cutoff denim vest. Oh and did we mention the Calvin Klein-inspired underwear?

Gosling was the first choice for the role but initially turned it down due to scheduling. The film has been in the works for several years meaning production dragged on long enough that the actor was eventually able to accept the role. The cast will also feature Emma Mackey, Will Ferrell and Kate McKinnon but the extent of their roles is not yet known.

An official synopsis has not been released but Robbie has teased plot details in past interviews.  “It comes with a lot of baggage,” Robbie said in an August 2021 interview. “[There’s] a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come[s] a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ‘Oh, well, maybe I don’t…’”

As with any Gerwig film, BARBIE is expected to provoke “thoughtful conversation” through a dystopian-esque movie. We still have a long time to wait, with the film set to release exclusively in theatres from June 21, 2023. Stay tuned for further updates.
