Two virus-ridden years have seen big films released onto small screens and the beloved past time of attending the cinema on a Thursday night all but dissipate due to theatre closures. The tone of Hollywood has shifted in recent months however with the return of the silver screen well in recovery. This week CinemaCon made a welcomed return in Las Vegas with theatre owners and industry members treated to sneak peek of upcoming films.

Unfortunately for you and I, these trailers and movie snippets are still privy to a select few, but we did however manage to nab a few first looks at the best films to release in the coming months. And for many, they’ve been long-awaited.

BARBIE

Overnight WarnerBros. Pictures released a first look at Australian export Margot Robbie in BARBIE. The film directed by Greta Gerwig and will release into cinemas from July 21, 2023. ELVIS

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis Presley biopic is just months away with guests of CinemaCon given a look at the forthcoming film. The Australian director was in attendance and per Deadlinesaid it “isn’t so much a biopic” but covers three version of the King of Rock. A rebel, Hollywood star and Vegas twilight. Starring Austin Butler, Tom Hanks and Australia’s Olivia DeJonge, it is set to be release on June 24, 2022.

“You know, I haven’t actually finished it,” confessed Luhrmann at the trade event this week. “If it feels a little like a superhero film, it is. Elvis is kind of the original superhero. He rises so high, then finds his kryptonite and falls so low and then a beautiful, powerful tragedy ensues.”

Paul King’s origin film, Wonka, might not be getting a release until Christmas 2023 but according to DeadlineWarnerBros shared an unreleased trailer. It reportedly starred lead Timothée Chalamet alongside Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson and Jim Carter while the musical number “You’ve Never Had Chocolate Like This” was also teased. AQUAMAN 2

Director James Wan attended CinemaCon this week to share an update on the DC Aquaman sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom admitting it was a “scary” film to make and discussed taking the superhero franchise to “the next level”.

“It’s been great,” he revealed per CB. “It’s been fun going back into Atlantis, and I hang out with the group and the gang, ultimately, continuing with the story that we created in the first movie.”

The film was originally slated to drop in December 2022 but has since been delayed for a theatrical release of March 17, 2023.
