Shakespeare purists may want to look away for this one. For everyone else a new and unexpected romantic comedy is set to be released soon for a perfect Friday night viewing, October 14 to be exact. Disney+ has revealed the first official trailer to Rosaline this week, a twist on the beloved tragedy of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet retold from the perspective of his ex.

“Heartbroken when Romeo (played by Kyle Allen) meets Juliet (Isabela Merced) and begins to pursue her, Rosaline (Kaitlyn Dever) schemes to foil the famous romance and win back her guy,” reads the official synopsis.

The upcoming film is based on the novel “When You Were Mine” by Rebecca Serle and is directed by Karen Maine from a screenplay by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine are the producers, with Kaitlin Dever, Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber, Whitney Brown, Emily Morris and Becca Edelman serving as executive producers.

The new rom com arrives off the back of Dever’s recently release film Ticket to Paradise featuring Lucas Bravo, George Clooney and Julia Roberts.

Rosaline is not the only adaption of a classic tale in 2022. In July Netflix released a lighthearted adaption of Jane Austen’s persuasion – despite online criticism – starring Dakota Johnson. “This film is really trying to combine the modern day, because the book itself was so ahead of its time,” co-star Mia McKenna-Bruce told GRAZIA.

We suggest watching Persuasion to whet your appetite before the release of Rosaline. The new movie will release to Hulu for US viewers and on Disney+ for Australian audiences from October 14. Watch the trailer below.
