Make no mistake, the nascent scalp health market is growing at a rate of knots. In fact, Google searches for “silicone scalp massager” jumped 250 percent in Australia alone in the last 12 months. So, when GRAZIA sat down with superstar Rita Ora and Vidaglow founder Anna Lahey to discuss their new haircare range Typebea—clean, dermatologically-tested formulations which claim to increase hair growth and reduce hair loss by a whopping 60 percent—our first question was naturally, ‘How is TypeBea different to other products already on the scalp and hair care market?”

“We’re really focusing on stimulating new hair growth, and strengthening, lengthening and revitalising hair,” says Lahey. “The three ingredients in Baicapil (which is the trademark active) are Chinese scullcap, soybean extract and a wheat germ extract. What [Baicapil] is designed to do is to stimulate self-proliferation, or activate the hair growth phase, within the hair growth cycle.”

“Baicapil is a clinically studied ingredient with big claims like reducing hair loss by 60 percent within the first three months of using it,” she continues. “You see new baby hairs spouting after using one 100ml bottle [of Typebea’s G1 Overnight Boosting Peptide]. Apply liberally to get those results.”

To launch, Typebea have released four products: the aforementioned Overnight Boosting Peptide, Strength + Length Shampoo, Strength + Length Conditioner, and the Hydra-Gloss Treatment.

“It’s the skin-ification of hair,” Lahey adds. “In the same way you have a skin routine, we want you to have a hair routine.”

Ora, who admits to the very real toll her career on stage has taken on her hair overtime, applies the Overnight Boosting Peptide—a traceless leave-in scalp serum—in front of me. Suitable to use on all hair types, as it’s water-based, it’s dry within minutes, doesn’t leave an oily residue, won’t weigh the hair down, and won’t build up on the scalp.

“Across my career which has spanned over a decade, I was always committed to the look I needed to achieve for a music video, a show or a photoshoot,” says Ora. “I never want to get boring and always want to experiment, but now [with Typebea] I can protect my hair in the meantime.”

For the record, the product range contains no nasties: no sulphates, no parabens, no silicones. But Lahey and Ora were adamant not to lose the luxury feel of lathering your shampoo.

“A lot of haircare is sensorial. I like to feel the lather in the shower, I don’t like to feel like I’m putting soap in my hair,” says Lahey.

While the serum is clearly the star product, the Hydra-Gloss Treatment—a hair mask—is a close second.

“The best thing about the the mask is that it takes three-minutes to work,” says Lahey. “You don’t need to put it in, wait 20 minutes and then have another shower. It’s got hyaluronic acid in this one too.”

“I sleep in mine!” interjects Ora. “I can because I have dry hair. It also defines my curls. It’s not meant for that, but it’s great for a curly girl who wants a bit more definition. It’s so hydrating and shiny.”
