To announce the impending arrival of their first child, Rihanna and A$AP Rocky had the world at their fingertips. They could have opted for a joint magazine cover or a highly stylised Instagram photoshoot, as Beyoncè famously did. They could have made like Kirsten Dunst and had Rihanna appear within a spread with her baby bump casually making its debut in the middle of the bed in Rodarte. I’m willing to be they even could have had President Joe Biden announce it at this point.
Instead, showing exactly why we love Rihanna so much, the singer opted to get a photographer to meet her on a street in New York City, where she and Rocky posed together in images that were shared by the media to break the news (and then millions of excited fans). Most incredibly, neither Rihanna nor Rocky bothered to post the pics to their own Instagram grids, making me wonder whether this simple, low-key and perfect move might kick off the era of people not posting their achievements to Instagram as though it’s a CV for your life.
Thankfully, the lack of post didn’t mean Rihanna’s going to hide her pregnancy journey—or sure to be incredible maternity wardrobe–from here on out. In fact, she’s now shared her own pregnancy announcement in the most Rihanna way possible: through a baby bump photo dump.
The first image the singer posted shows her standing in a bathroom wearing a sports jersey pulled up to show her bump. She captioned it, “how the gang pulled up to black history month.”
The next three slides are from her original announcement, showing Rocky kissing her head in one pic—the first couple pic she’s posted of her musician beau on her grid—before a close-up of her belly and, finally, a gorgeous shot of her standing alone (which was hilariously one of the most shared images of the whole announcement, because despite Rocky being famous, talented and stylish, this is Rihanna having a baby! Rihanna.)
