It’s hard to keep much privacy when you’re a celebrity, but since becoming a mother earlier this year, Rihanna has worked overtime to keep public information on her son to a minimum. And as much as we’ve tried to guess the name of her sweet baby boy, the singer and her partner, A$AP Rocky, have kept tight-lipped.
That is until now. Yes, people, we have a name!
In some serious investigative journalism, the Daily Mail has uncovered the official birth certificate of the couple’s firstborn, revealing his name to be RZA Athelston Mayers. The first name is taken from Wu-Tang Clan member RZA, and his middle name is shared with his father, whose full name is Rakim Athelston Mayers.
According to reports, the rapper’s family has a long-standing tradition of naming their children after favourite rappers. He himself is named after the legendary rapper Rakim who was big in the ’80s and ’90s. Rakim, whose birth name is William Michael Griffin Jr., actually recalls meeting Rocky as a little boy while visiting Harlem.
“I remember a long time ago, driving through Harlem. A lady walks across the street. I’m at the light, she walks across the street. She got the carriage and everything,” he told Hot 97 in 2019. “She says can ‘you sign this for me?’ I never say no. I say, ‘what’s his name?’ Rakim. I’m like word?! She’s like Rakim… I remember that day, cause that was the first time hearing someone named their son after me. Like I said, humbling experience.”
Rihanna is currently expecting her second child with Rocky, announcing the news during her iconic Superbowl halftime performance.
While we’ve already received a few glimpses into pregnancy life, the Fenty Beauty founder will likely keep quiet on her second child’s name as long as she can.
The family recently fronted the cover of British Vogue, where Rihanna later made the announcement that she had actually been pregnant with her second child while shooting, unbeknownst to her or Rocky.
