Like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, the week leading up to Christmas just wouldn’t be right without filling your nightly stream with festive favourites. As popular culture consistently gives a nostalgic nod to the late 90s and early 2000s – a tipping of the cap to the time we spent together if you will – there’s no time like the end of the year to revisit cult classics. Enter The O.C. Or more accurately Seth Cohen’s Chrismukkah (a merging of Christianity’s Christmas and Judaism’s Hanukkah).

Determined to convince everybody around him of the true power of Jesus and Moses combined, the loveable, nerdy teen sets out on a mission to change bad boy Ryan Atwood’s negative connotations with Christmas. On a different plotline altogether is Marisa Cooper; a beautiful mess since her family foundations were rocked by bankruptcy and divorce. She resorts to shoplifting her Christmas presents and makes getting very drunk glamourous, in Chanel no less. Kirsten (pronounced Keer-stan in America), always looks worried over her father’s shady meddling in the family company while Sandy Cohen, next to Seth, is likely the reason you added Chrismukkah to your streaming list in the first place.

Unlike some old television episodes where watching them again completely ruins your fond memories, The O.C. stands up in 2018 and still has you wishing you lived in a boat house. No matter how your viewing the Christmas period – with excitement or dread – Chrismukkah will make you smile. Just as Seth promised.
