Barbara Palvin

Classic winged eyeliner never goes out of style, but it’s not necessarily a look that would make you stop and stare. One that would, however, is inner corner eyeliner: a super cool and slightly edgy look that’s as perfect for dinner with friends as it is for a high-fashion editorial. Our inspiration? Barbara Palvin’s fierce liner look, brought to life by celebrity makeup artist Tobi Henney.

“This was probably one of my most favourite makeup looks I have created for Barbara,” Henny tells GRAZIA in an interview. “This was her glam for when she attended the Versace Fall/Winter front row for its 2020-2021 show in Milan in February this year. It was teamed with the incredible hair look which was created by Owen Gould and her Versace look styled by Michela Buratti.”

Henney aptly calls this sexy glam the “feline eye look.” It’s defined by the eyeliner’s extra length created by pulling it inward from the inner eye, as well as the extending flick on the outer corner. To ensure that all attention went straight to Palvin’s eyes, Henney opted for a natural lip and a luminous complexion.

How to Get the “Feline Eye Look”

If you’re planning on recreating the look at home, essentials include liquid eyeliner, mascara, and foundation. Henny used Giorgio Armani Eyes To Kill Lacquered Liquid Eyeliner in Black on Palvin, paired with one of her all-time favourite mascaras: Armani Eyes To Kill Classico Mascara. And to perfect the Victoria’s Secret model’s skin, she used her go-to Armani Luminous Silk Foundation to give her that lit-from-within glow.

As is the case with any type of liquid eyeliner application, your first step is to, well, prepare for error (unless you’re an expert, then props to you). “To create the perfect wing, it is helpful to have the mini cotton tips on hand and some makeup remover,” Henney advises. “That way, you can clean up any mistake attempts when trying to achieve your feline liner.”

Now for how it’s done. “I like to start with the liner sitting quite flat in the centre of the eye and pull outward,” she says. “You always want to make sure the flick goes upward for this look, not straight out or down. Placing a tiny dot on where you want to finish is a great guide, and then I pull the flick inward from the finish point.” After that, do the same for your inner corner point, and then connect it to the rest of the liner you have completed. Obviously, this isn’t a look you should attempt in a rush.

The key to perfecting the bold liner? “Small strokes always work best for this,” Henney explains. “Once the liner is finished, you can always go back and make it more intense and thicken up anywhere needed.”
