Pop culture has had some iconic duos (Sonny and Cher, Elton and Bernie) but I think I speak for many when I say that the pairing of Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande is a pinnacle in modern pop. The two released their debut track Rain On Me over the weekend and while the house tune itself is great, the accompanying video is even better.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez, the three-minute video is like Gaga’s interpretation of a Chromatica dance off; a sci-fi, post-apocalyptic world washed in shades of deep pink and moody purple. W Magazine even referenced the similarities between the setting and iconic video game Mortal Kombat – a fair analysis when you compare battle scenes between the two.

What’s also noteworthy though is the beauty looks: a melange of stark white cat-like liner, hyper-glossy lips, face studs, chain eye accruements, giant pony tails and lots of sooty black shadow.

The looks were crafted by Sarah Tanno, Gaga’s makeup artist and the Global Artistry Director at Haus Laboratories, Gaga’s own makeup line that launched late last year.

Tanno posted a series of musings and how-to’s on her Instagram, talking about the incredible video in detail. There’s one look where Gaga appears as if she’s “crying diamonds”, where Tanno used two different types of Swarovski crystals, applied in only 30 minutes between takes.

Or the chained liner look, where Tanno actually glued tiny chains around Gaga’s eye, using Haus Laboratories Liquid Eye-Lie-Ner to draw a think black wing in between. To accompany, her lips were painted a matte shade of brick red and rimmed with an almost-black lip liner; a look not quite right for isolation, but in an alternative universe, I’d try it for sure.

Hair was styled to epic proportions too: a giant purple pony tail here, a rose-pink shaggy mullet there. The whole video was, in classic Gaga style, one big beauty moment – made even more special by the fact her own product line was used. Like makeup on Mars.
