It’s difficult to pin point the late Princess Diana’s most beloved ensemble. Was it her voluminous wedding gown from ’81? Or her revenge dress in ’95? Indeed the royal captured the hearts of women all over the globe and as history recalls, the imagination of Dior. In 1994 the French fashion house renamed the popular Chouchou top-handle the ‘Lady Dior’ after the Princess. She was captured clutching the bag on many occasions but perhaps most famously on the Met Gala red carpet in 1996.
Diana was photographed alongside her close friend Liz Tilberis as she climbed the steps of the Met wearing a navy lace slip dress with pearls and a mini satin iteration of the Lady Dior. In a celebration of heritage and savoir-faire excellence, Dior has released a re-edition of the exclusive bag this season. The silver hardware is embellished with dazzling rhinestones while the body is quilted with architectural cannage using a blue satin. It should come as no surprise that the new release is available in very limited quantities – just four in Australia at the Castlereagh Street boutique in Sydney.
The Lady Dior was originally designed by Gianfranco Ferre in 1994 who was inspired by the Napoleon III chairs used in his first show in 1947. Over the years, the legendary bag has blossomed in a multitude of colours, sizes and materials. Its renaissance, season after season, is now carried by the vision of Maria Grazia Chiuri who has redesigned it in new shades and formats, from Lady D-Lite to Lady D-Joy.
Now the likes of Yara Shahidi and Meghan Markle carry the bag, captivating the essence of the historic silhouette in their own way. Learn more, here.
