Like the presence of the peachy pink hue on the calcifying coral reefs from which it takes its name, Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2019, Living Coral, is perhaps at its most powerful when it’s only found in small doses.

Officially described in a breathless press release as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energises and enlivens with a softer edge”, Living Coral’s arrival doubles as a considerable pivot away from the more subdued tones of years past (2018’s Ultra Violet notwithstanding): the verdant, inoffensive Greenery of 2017 or the pastel binary of 2016’s Rose Quartz blush and Serenity’s cool blue hue. Despite its insistence that the colour “emits the desired, familiar, and energising aspects of colour found in nature”, Living Coral borders on candy coated, and as such makes for a suitable accent or design flourish where matters of the home are concerned.

Start small. Think Cire Trudon’s Amon candle, which exudes aptly woody notes of cedar, sandalwood and rose with a traditional incense base and is hand-poured in France into a peach glass case with an emblem-embossed gold decal on the front. Or a hand blown glass bonsai from the Melbourne artist Amanda Dziedzic, preferably in a perfectly named shade dubbed ‘Aperol Spritz’. Softer to the touch, and on the larger side should you wish to dial things up a notch, try the Sunday Maybe rug, a vintage Moroccan Boujad wool carpet made in the 1970s and sourced from Tigmi Trading, or a reversible hand quilted cotton throw by Cold Picnic. The materiality of both subdues the high-vis ‘safety orange’ element of Living Coral into complimentary accents that won’t see you doing double time as the building fire warden. Should you want to go all the way, the Kelly Sofa in a graphic or a side table by Float in a perfect match described as ‘Peach Coral’ will put you in good stead long after the next colour du jour is announced.

Perhaps safest of all: cover your bases and valuables alike with the iPhone XS Max silicone case in ‘Nectarine’. Either way, both phone and case colour will be due for an update before the year’s out.
