Depending on which side of 2000 you were born in, ‘Malibu’ could either refer to a poignant love song penned by Miley Cyrus or a downtempo alternative rock track from Hole.
Such is true for Malibu locals Pamela Anderson and Francesca Aiello of Frankies Bikinis. Their respective time in Malibu may have been different, but it’s a place they both hold dear in their hearts.
Now, the pair have teamed up for a 90s-inspired collection that pays homage to their mutual affinity for the exclusive beach-side suburb.
It’s safe to say that the locale of Malibu has changed since the Baywatch alumni and memoirist swapped the paparazzi and palm tree-laden streets for the cosy alcove of Vancouver Island but for the California locals, the bluffs and beaches are a sartorial starting point for their new collection.
It’s a fitting partnership considering Anderson’s most memorable role saw her frolic the beaches lining Los Angeles’ Pacific Coast Highway in nothing but a red one-piece.
But what readers may not know is that this collection is not just a case of Frankie’s Bikinis tapping the celebrity of the moment, but one that was spurred on by their roots as neighbours in Paradise Cove.
Harnessing Frankies Bikinis inimitable ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist for covetable swimwear that defines the tone of now, it’s only natural that their collaboration with Anderson would feature the most iconic swimsuit of all time: the red one-piece.
“I have been in a bathing suit for most of my life,” Anderson explains before adding that these innately feminine pieces are “based on some of my all-time favourites and treasured archives”.
“I created my dream collection—I took everything I loved and put them into these pieces, the high-cut leg, one-pieces with buttons, long ties on the bottoms, cute fabrics and colours.”
The result is a 22-piece series of floral and flirty bathers that combine the 90s glamazon aesthetic with today’s appetite for sensuality.
It’s a milestone for both Anderson and Aiello to reprise this iconic silhouette, but as things take on new life over time, the collection is proof that Anderson’s a timeless icon who’s star power shows no sign of diminishing soon. Oh, and she’ll always be our ultimate summer muse.
As Anderson herself said: “I have been wanting to do this forever, but timing is everything, and it was worth the wait.”
