Oscars nominations shortlist
Edit: Kimberlee Kessler

Despite a tumultuous past year for the film industry, the hotly-anticipated awards season is about to kick off. Today the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the Oscars shortlists across nine categories and lends a prelude to what we can expect from the forthcoming nominations.

According to Variety, initial voting concluded on February 5 and includes categories across best documentary feature, documentary short subject, international feature, makeup and hairstyling, original score, original song, animated short film, live action short film and visual effects. The shortlist will then be subject to another round of voting with offical nominations announced on March 15 – mark your calendars!

Among the fellow contenders, it is clear that streaming services such as Netflix and Apple TV have struck gold amid the pandemic. My Octopus Teacher, Netflix’s mesmerising docco about a man’s unlikely bond with the sea creature and Apple TV’s Boys State are just some of the films in the running for Best Documentary.

As for feature films, there is a large mix of popular productions such as Tenet, Soul, The Midnight Sky and Mulan up for Best Visual Effects and Best Music. Looking at these preliminary lists, there are a couple of films that could take out Best Picture too. Emma starring the stunning Anya Taylor-Joy was among the films listed for Best Make Up & Hair Styling.
