Before the red carpet had even begun there were whispers that Kristen Stewart would be wearing Chanel shorts to the 2022 Oscars. If history was any indication, we had no doubt that the rumours would be true. Indeed the actress stepped onto the red carpet this evening alongside fiancée Dylan Meyer in a cropped black blazer, hot pants and a white open shirt and loafers from the French fashion house.

Stewart is up for her very first Oscars nomination, Best Actress In A Leading Role, for her stunning portrayal of Princess Diana in Pablo Larraín’s biopic, Spencer. While the power suit has long been a glamorous alternative to the ball gown in years gone by, the shorts are a historic choice. The only other woman to wear shorts on the Oscars red carpet was Demi Moore in 1989 which was paired with a voluminous train.

According to a new interview with Stewart’s stylist Tara Swennen, it wasn’t so much about making an impact, rather than having the actress feel like her most authentic self. “For us, it was more about creating a look that was authentically hers, as this was her big, special day,” Swennen said. “She has been wearing lots of gowns, but today was her day to do whatever she wanted.”

Speaking on red carpet, Stewart said she wasn’t nervous at all since it didn’t feel real: “I’m truly baffled”. On her first nomination she said, “I’ve been working since I was nine years old in a family that loves movies and loves making movies. The fact that I’m here for the first time… it just makes sense. [Princess Diana] needs to be big. She is important, she is nice, she touches people.”

Prior to the nominations announcement, Stewart had actually revealed she “didn’t give a s**t” if she was nominated. Something tells us she really did. The nominee is already working on her next project, a television show alongside her fiancée.
