Olivia Wilde’s name has been in the headlines for a multitude of reasons this past. She directed—and starred in—a huge blockbuster film, Don’t Worry Darling. She dated one of the world’s most famous musicians, Harry Styles. She was caught up in a still (somewhat) unexplained feud with her film’s lead, Florence Pugh. She was served custody papers by her ex-husband Jason Sudeikis while working on stage at a live event. Then Shia LeBeouf popped up. But my favourite news story of all? The reported role her salad dressing recipe played in her divorce.

According to Wilde and Sudeikis’ former nanny, who spoke to the Daily Mail about the marriage breakdown, Wilde has a “special” salad dressing that she once made for Styles while still living with Sudeikis.

Sudeikis allegedly told the nanny, “She made this salad, and she made her special dressing, and she’s leaving with her salad to have dinner with” Harry. When the nanny asked him to explain what he meant by “special salad dressing,” the actor allegedly said, “She has a special salad dressing she makes for us and she’s taken it to have it with him now.”

The nanny, who remained anonymous, also shared a screenshot purported to be sent from Sudeikis after Wilde left their children in bed to go see Styles: “Took her salad and dressing and left them,” it read. When pressed by the curious journalist about the salad’s ingredients, the nanny simply said, “I don’t know what was in it.”

Naturally, the internet went into meltdown mode following this very important detail being revealed with The Cut dedicating an entire article to the dressing and the meme, “If I was Olivia Wilde, I would post the salad dressing recipe and then turn my phone off” going viral.

Well, 24 hours later, Wilde did just that. Taking to Instagram Stories, the 38-year-old shared a page from Nora Ephron’s 1983 Roman à clef, Heartburn — based on the author’s divorce from Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein. On the page, the novel’s main character divulges a recipe for a salad dressing she makes for her husband.

“Mix 2 tablespoons Grey Poupon mustard with 2 tablespoons good red wine vinegar. Then, whisk constantly with a fork, slowly add 6 tablespoons olive oil, until the vinaigrette is thick and creamy; this makes a very strong vinaigrette that’s perfect for salad greens like arugula and watercress and endive,” the recipe read, in part.

As People notes, this recipe is similar to the one she shared during an appearance on Questlove’s Potluck on the Food Network in 2020. On the show, Wilde made roast salmon salad with zucchini and potatoes. For that dressing preparation, she kept the 2 tablespoons of vinegar but only used 1 tablespoon of mustard and 2-4 tablespoons of olive oil, plus honey, salt and garlic.

Mystery solved.
