From the 90s to Y2K, beauty’s penchant for nostalgia is showing no signs of slowing down. The latest piece of evidence? Nail piercing, which is making a comeback in a major way. The hashtag #nailpiercing now has more than 13 million views and counting on TikTok, as the decorative nail trend – which sees nail art enthusiasts add a ring, stud or chains to their nails – makes a notable return to prominence.

It should come as little surprise that such a memorable trend should once again resurface, given fashion and beauty’s current obsession with all things Noughties. As our brows get thinner, our lipliner gets darker and having stacked ear piercings continues in popularity, nail piercings were almost guaranteed to re-enter the chat at some stage – especially when the likes of Victoria Beckham are on board.

And sure, we know what you’re thinking – adding such nail accoutrements is far too OTT for many people’s liking. But the good news is that the 2023 iteration of the trend is far more wearable than you might’ve guessed. Exhibit A: the subtle single and double-ringed naked manicure that renowned nail artist Iram Shelton created for makeup artist Nikki Wolff.

Shelton has incorporated a slew of chains, rings, studs and drop jewels in her designs of late, proving that the polarising trend doesn’t have to be too exaggerated and overdone. Speaking to GRAZIA UK about the recent nail piercing revival, Shelton said, “I just love how nail piercings can elevate a traditional manicure and make your nails a focal point.”

The best part? Nail piercings are easy to achieve at home, so you can try it out on your own talons without stepping foot into a nail salon. TikTok is full of tutorials for the best way to DIY your nail piercings, but Shelton also has some advice to impart.

“When it comes to DIY nail piercings,” she told the publication, “I’d always advise piercing a press-on nail instead of your natural nail. You just need a nail piercing tool – it looks like a very small drill – and a steady hand.”
