MPavilion, Melbourne’s season-long cultural symposium centred around an architectural commission by a leading international architect, has unveiled its annual programme of events.
This year’s MPavilion has been designed by the lauded Barcelona-based architect, Carme Pinós of Estudio Carme Pinós, whose deeply humanist architectural practice exhibits a commitment to the specifics of each project, its local and regional identity, and to the experience of the individual visitor or inhabitant. Pinós will deliver a series of talks, including an opening lecture, a panel discussion curated by Melbourne Festival titled ‘The land on which we stand‘ – billed as an exploration of country, levels of meaning, occupation and use of land – and two ‘in conversation‘ style events as part of the MTalks series. Celebrated former director of Tate, Sir Nicholas Serota CH, will also appear as part of that program, delivering a keynote address on ‘The art museum in flux‘. Having transformed the museum under his directorship, Serota will discuss “the impact of these changes on the outlook and programmes of museums with special reference to the evolution of Tate during the period in which he led on the creation of Tate Modern, the adoption of a wider international perspective and the development of a new approach to audiences.”
As part of the MProject series of events, an ‘In Residence’ program will explore the intersections of art, architecture and writing through the residencies of writer, Maddee Clark, and artist, Esther Stewart. The artist, perhaps best known outside art circles for her collaboration with Maison Valentino, will be creating a larger-than-life installation that explores the endless possibilities offered by the visual languages of architecture, design and geometry and that will take over Pinós’ pavilion for two weeks over the new year. Another MProject series will see the Fixperts, a creative social campaign that uses design to solve everyday problems, use crowdsourcing methods to intervene and aid a member of the local community in a very real way.
A series of MMeets activations will also engage the city with everything from beginners’ dance and yoga workshops courtesy of the contemporary dance studio Chunky Move to events that dissect the mechanics of modern Australian theatrical practice from writing to performance and production in conjunction with the Melbourne Theatre Company. Then there’s an exhaustive program of tag-team style relay talks, an ongoing forum discussing issues relating to Indigenous architecture, a litany of live music events and not one but many events staged in service of the city’s partying needs.
