Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have stepped out for their first official outing since relocating to Los Angeles in March, commemorating Remembrance Sunday with a visit to the Los Angeles National Cemetery. Markle wore a belted black coat dress by Brandon Maxwell for the occasion, in which she and her husband laid wreaths at the graves of fallen war veterans.

Both Duke and Duchess of Sussex wore commemorative poppies on their lapels and, per royal reporter Omid Scobie, lay flowers hand-picked by Markle from the garden of the couple’s family home in Montecito. Remembrance Day, which is a UK-based holiday celebrating the casualties of war, is an event particularly close to Prince Harry’s heart. He famously spent 10 years serving in the army, taking two tours of Afghanistan and working his way up to Captain, before going on to create the Invictus Games.

Had the couple been able to travel, they would have likely flown back to the UK to join The Queen, Kate Middleton and the rest of the British Royal Family at the socially-distanced commemoration at the Cenotaph in London’s Westminster.

A new report by The Times alleges that the prince requested a wreath be laid in his name for the event, seeing as he couldn’t be there in person, a request that was denied by the palace. The reports transpired on Twitter, with many arguing that Prince Harry had more than earned the right to lay a wreath, given his long military history.

At the London event, Middleton also opted for a chic belted coat dress, wearing a custom creation by Alexander McQueen. McQueen is a long-time favourite designer of the Duchess’, and the final look paid homage to the military uniform with a tasseled shoulder detail and a stiff collar. Her sculptural headpiece was by Philip Treacy.

Given the UK has just entered a second lockdown, it’s no surprise that social distancing was heavily enforced throughout the occasion. Not only were Middleton and Prince William not photographed together, but the Queen was only able to appear on the Westminster balcony alone. Here’s hoping that this time next year the whole family will be reunited. We really do miss those balcony shots.
