In a sign of growing distance between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and Prince William and Kate Middleton, the couples have split their shared charity.
It was announced overnight that Harry and Meghan have left The Royal Foundation, the charity the foursome have until now run together, to start their own organisation.
“Later this year The Royal Foundation will become the principal charitable and philanthropic vehicle for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge,” the statement from Kensington Palace read.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will establish their own new charitable foundation with transitional operating support from The Royal Foundation.”
The statement said despite the break-up, the couple will still work together on certain projects, including The Foundation’s mental health program, Heads Together.
Anticipating the public’s questions and concerns about what the end of the partnership means, the statement explained the decision was purely business.
“These changes are designed to best complement the work and responsibilities of Their Royal Highnesses as they prepare for their future roles, and to better align their charitable activity with their new households,” it said.
Rumours of tensions between the two couples have been consistent for a long time now, kicking off with the Sussexes’ move to Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, more than an hour away from William and Kate in Kensington Palace.
But maybe it’s all been blown just a little out of proportion. Is it really so surprising that Harry would want to form his own identity distinctly different to his big brother’s, especially now he’s a husband and a father?
Perhaps Harry and Meghan want to be more outspoken on certain issues than British royals typically have been in the past, especially since Meghan has been vocal about feminism and other topics the royals usually stay quiet about.
And let’s not forget that Prince William is in-line to be King after his father Prince Charles. So unless some horrible fate awaits William and all his children, heaven forbid, Harry will never be king, meaning he has different, and more flexible options for his life. No drama to see here … at least, probably not.
