The theme of the 2023 Met Gala may have been ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty’, but it seems that Margot Robbie turned to another prolific figure in Chanel’s 113-year history: Coco Chanel herself.
Indeed, while Robbie sported a 1986 Lagerfeld-era silk chiffon gown from the luxury French maison to walk the beige carpet alongside her fellow Chanel ambassadors, her after-party ensemble was a display of Chanel-isms, sporting a flirty little black dress. Coco’s signature, of course.
These days, it’s often hard to separate Coco from Chanel, with her contributions to her eponymous label woven into the very (tweed) fabric of the house.
Such is true with many of the Met Gala attendees sporting oversized rosette camellias, with this being a staple of Coco, not Karl.
So, it seems that Robbie’s after-hours interpretation of the ‘In Honour Of Karl’ dress code was not merely about glorifying the late designer for his overall contributions to fashion, but rather his innate impact on the house of Chanel.
Robbie sported a strapless black sequin mini dress for the late-night fête—which reportedly didn’t conclude into the early hours of the first Tuesday in May.
The midnight-hued number (befitting for the hour in which Robbie stepped out in it) was flanked by two pieces of ivory trim and featured white zig-zag accents.
Robbie styled her blonde hair into her signature beachy waves and sported a very Coco-approved white box purse with a matching black flap.
Considering the last time we saw Robbie indulge in a night of debauchery was on-screen for her Oscar-nominated historical epic Babylon, it’s only fitting she sartorially references the era in which the film was set and the era Chanel first designed the LBD.
As Chanel said herself: “One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a Little Black Dress.”
