New Zealand musician Lorde attended the 2021 Guggenheim International Gala in New York City last night dressed in a burnt orange Dior chiffon down and an unlikely accessory: an intricate scarf fashioned from her own hair.

The avant guard beauty look was created by stylist Cameron Rains, and involved wrapping her long brunette strands around her neck and securing into a ponytail. Despite its quirks, it was incredibly beautiful, especially paired with a soft sherbet orange makeup look and drop pearl earrings.

And while this might be a stretch, we can’t help but notice humour in the timing of it all. A scarf — once owned by Taylor Swift but since reclaimed by ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal — has been the talk of every tabloid and news outlet this week since the singer released the ‘All Too Well’ short film a few days ago that detailed the pair’s previous relationship. According to the lyrics, Swift left her scarf at Gyllenhaal’s sister’s place over Thanksgiving, and allegedly he’s held on to it ever since.

“But you keep my old scarf from that very first week / Because it reminds of innocence and it smells like you / You can’t get rid of it, because you remember it all too well,” Swift sings.

Lorde and Swift were famously best friends at one point, but it was reported earlier this year they’ve drifted due to work/friendship tensions. But either way, it feels like a fitting tribute to Taylor’s lost scarf… a sign of support, maybe?

Following the red carpet appearance, Lorde traded in the look for two long, thick braids secured with a satin ribbon. The school yard style, worn with a glittering Dior suit, looks amazing on the Solar Power singer. Here’s hoping she has more red carpet appearances soon.
