Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz’s extravagant Palm Beach wedding has been the leading entertainment news story for most of this week, with the fashion and entertainment worlds collectively cooing over Peltz’s custom Valentino gown and perving on the couple’s A-list guest list. Seeing proud parents David and Victoria Beckham in all their finery (Victoria wore her own design, David wore custom Kim Jones for Dior Homme) the internet was quickly reminded of the Beckhams own extravagant nuptials, which took place 23 years ago this July.
It’s difficult to fully communicate the impact ‘Posh and Becks’ had on popular culture in the late ’90s. He was the handsome star footballer for one of Britain’s best teams, she was the fashion-obsessed member of the biggest girl group on the planet. Together they became what we’d now call a ‘megabrand’, Brangelina before Brangelina, Jay and Bey before Jay and Bey. Expectations for their wedding (David proposed in early 1998 but the pair’s wedding plans were pushed back after Victoria fell pregnant with Brooklyn) were high—and the couple delivered, and then some.

Reported to cost £500,000 at the time (around £900,000 now, still less than their son’s reported $3 million USD nuptials), the Beckham’s rented out a castle in Ireland, with Victoria wearing a £10,000 tiara and the pair sitting on gilded thrones for the wedding dinner. Having sold rights to images exclusively to OK! magazine, the wedding became a tabloid frenzy, with leaked information continuing to come out over the years. This included quotes from David’s wedding speech, in which he sweetly said: “Victoria wakes up every day and seems to get more beautiful every time I see her. I know that a lot of people say that we’ve done it the wrong way round – had Brooklyn and then got married -but if you’ve got love, nothing else matters.”
The wedding ceremony was witnessed by an intimate collection of 29 close friends and family, with Victoria’s sister Louise serving as bridesmaid and David’s teammate Gary Neville as best man. Victoria wore a custom Vera Wang strapless gown which she altered by wearing a tightly fitted corset by English corsetiere Mr Pearl underneath, and a petticoat containing 50 metres of Clerici Duchess satin. The look cemented Beckham—already an internationally beloved style star—as an icon in the making.
