Apparently Leonardo DiCaprio has always known a good script when he sees one.

While he’s built an incredible career playing lead roles in critically acclaimed films and rarely signs on for a dud, even at 24 he knew landing the part of Romeo in Baz Luhrman’s big screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s play was important.

The Australian director revealed to iHeart Radio recently that he was interested in but not completely sold on Leo for the part of Romeo – so DiCaprio hopped on a plane bound for Australia with a bunch of friends in tow.

“When I saw Leonardo I thought, God, that’s how he should look. But can he act?” Luhrmann said. “Then I found out he was the pre-eminent young actor.”

“He came down to Australia and he brought all these friends and we made a whole video of the show with other actors,” the director explained. “I won’t say who, it will never be seen; I realised that I couldn’t make it without him.”

Oh, come on Baz, just a quick look? We won’t show it to anyone. Promise.
