America has officially turned a page….and things sure look good! On Wednesday, January 20, Lady Gaga kicked off the presidential inauguration of Joe Biden from the West Front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.
The pop superstar gave a goosebumps-inducing performance of the national anthem while wearing a custom ensemble by Schiaparelli Haute Couture, designed by Daniel Roseberry. The jaw-dropping avant-garde look included a navy cashmere fitted jacket, dramatic full skirt in washed red silk faille and gilded dove of peace brooch. She pinned up her platinum blonde locks in a whimsical crown braid.
“As an American living in Paris, this ensemble is a love letter to the country I miss so dearly and to a performer whose artistry I have so long admired,” commented Roseberry. “Maison Schiaparelli is honored to have this chance to dress the iconic Lady Gaga on this historic Inauguration Day. God Bless Lady Gaga and God Bless America.”
“Singing our National Anthem for the American People is my honor. I will sing during a ceremony, a transition, a moment of change — between POTUS 45 and 46. For me, this has great meaning,” Gaga tweeted shortly before the performance. “My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly. I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land.”
At 12 p.m. ET, Biden was officially sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. Kamala Harris also made history becoming the first woman, first Black person and first South East Asian American to serve as Vice President of The United States. She was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, a fellow former prosecutor and the first Latina Supreme Court Justice.
This was hardly Gaga’s first time singing “The Star’s Spangled Banner” on a national stage. Back in 2016, she performed a critically lauded rendition of the national anthem at Super Bowl 50 prior to headlining the big game’s halftime show one year later.
The day before Inauguration Day, the “Rain On Me” star arrived at the Capitol wearing a custom cape dress courtesy of Givenchy by Matthew Williams, a white mask and her platinum-blonde hair tied in braids.,
“I pray tomorrow will be a day of peace for all Americans. A day for love, not hatred. A day for acceptance not fear. A day for dreaming of our future joy as a country. A dream that is non-violent, a dream that provides safety for our souls. Love, from the Capitol,” she shared on social media.
Gaga was just the first of many performances lined up for the inauguration celebration. Jennifer Lopez followed up the 35-year-old singing “America The Beautiful.’ Later this evening, Justin Timberlake, Jon Bon Jovi, Demi Lovato, and Ant Clemons, will perform on the Inauguration Day prime time TV special, Celebrating America. The 90-minute broadcast will be hosted by Tom Hanks and air on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC at 8:30 p.m. ET. Viewers can also tune in to the Presidential Inauguration Committee’s social media channels in addition to certain streaming and cable platforms.
