The great thing about makeup is that it’s completely up to the wearer as to how it’s used. It can be a form of self expression, a way to boost confidence, a means of self care, a fun boredom-quelling activity, or something you abstain from completely because at the end of the day, the choice is yours.

But the current climate (i.e. we’ve stopped going outside) has really challenged the way we think about it and beauty in general. Are we wearing makeup for ourselves, or for everyone else? There’s no right or wrong answer – some people have been barefaced for the last three months, whereas others have gone full glam for a night on the couch. I’ve sat somewhere in between – enjoying the extra time to sip my coffee in the morning but adding a little brow gel and concealer when I’m feeling super flat. Believe it when I say the power of makeup knows no bounds.

For Lady Gaga, makeup almost seems a part of who she is. For starters, she has her own makeup brand Haus Laboratories, but she’s also a performer who favours theatrics and transforming the way she looks – two things in which makeup functions as the perfect vessel. On Instagram earlier today, Gaga posted an image of herself in a thick, inky black wing and glassy candy-pink lips with the caption, “When you do your makeup during quarantine just cuz… 🤦‍♀️💕”.

It was a nice nod to the fact that makeup can be fun/art/expressive and for no one but yourself – a sentiment I can really stand behind.

The image is tagged with Haus Laboratories, so she’s clearly used her own line of products (available via Amazon).
