Kendrick Lamar has been awarded the Pulitzer Prize for music.

As announced overnight, the rapper’s fourth studio album DAMN earned him the prestigious award.

It’s a historic moment, since Lamar is the first rap artist to receive the top honour –  it’s typically awarded to classical or jazz works. Check out the list of winners for the last few decades and try to pretend you recognise a single other song.

It’s hardly the first time Kendrick has been praised by critics. At the Grammys DAMN won best rap album, and Humble picked up best rap performance, best rap song and best music video.

And locally, he took out the number one spot on the 2018 Triple J Hottest 100 list.

He’s yet to publicly respond to the accolade, but we’ve no doubt when he does he’ll be humble.
