There must be something in the water. After an unprecedented year of celebrity hair transformations, Katy Perry is the latest to unveil a fresh chop—a look that’s once again propelling rumours that the 38-year-old pop star may have a secret Hollywood doppelgänger.
In a video promoting De Soi, Perry’s new line of sparkling, non-alcohol apéritifs (with adaptogens might we add), the songstress swapped her signature tumbling brunette waves for a feathery updo and chic curtain bangs.
Taking a leaf out of Dakota Johnson, Alexa Chung and Emily Ratajkowski’s book, Perry’s textured and tousled fringe is an unexpected addition to the French fringe club, but one we welcome nonetheless.
Anyone who keeps up with Katy may know the new cut was a style she briefly debuted back in April for an episode of American Idol. Perry donned a silver carpenter jacket and black leather gloves in the image she posted to Instagram.
Considering that Perry wasn’t seen sporting the fringe in her performance at King Charles III’s coronation or Tiffany & Co’s star-studded soiree to celebrate the reopening of their 5th Avenue flagship, perhaps this fringe redux is signalling a renaissance of the style.
Alas, on closer inspection it’s clear the new video Perry posted was also filmed back in April, meaning that this fringe fantasy will have to be short-lived.
Nevertheless, it didn’t stop people from reigniting the rumour that Perry and Zooey Deschanel are secretly twins. As Perry herself once revealed, the star used to pretend to be Deschanel in the early noughts, using their eerily similar resemblance to her advantage to sneak into clubs.
“When I first got to L.A., I went to the club. A lot. And I wanted to get into the club, but I had no money, I had no clout, I had nothing, and sometimes I would pose as you to get into the club,” Perry told Deschanel over an Instagram live in 2020.
“People were like ‘I saw you!’ But I’m such a goody-two-shoes, and people kept going like, ‘I saw you out! I made eye contact with you!’,” Deschanel told Perry of these awkward run-ins. “
Everybody kept telling me about you, ‘This girl Katy, she looks just like you,’ and I’m like, ‘Who is this Katy?’ And then when I first met you, I was so relieved because you’re so pretty, and I was like, ‘Oh, thank God. She’s so pretty’.”
We wonder what Deschanel would have to say about Perry’s twining fringe moment…
