Katy Perry loves to play when it comes to fashion (her Moschino Met Gala hamburger for the 2019 year’s camp after-party will go down in history). But when it comes to momentous occasions, the singer isn’t one to eschew the dress code. Just a few years ago, Perry was the final performer for President Joe Biden’s inauguration, for which she wore a custom-made white Thom Browne gown with red and blue button accents to perform her hit song, Firework.
For another history-making moment, this time with a palace involved – King Charles III’s Coronation in London – Perry turned to one of the most respected designers to come from the country: the late Vivienne Westwood.
Arriving at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, Perry wore a custom-made lilac suit by Westwood, paired with elbow-length gloves, a matching fascinator, and the brand’s iconic pearl necklace. She noted on Instagram, while joking about the viral meme of her confused about where to sit (“I found my seat”), that she was invited to the event for her work with The British Asian Trust’s Children Protection Fund, an organisation she’s been working with for the past three years.
The next night, Perry didn’t need to explain the reason behind her attendance: she was booked as performing at the Coronation Concert, alongside Lionel Richie and Olly Murs.
Stealing the show, Perry appeared on stage in a corseted 18th-century silhouetted gown custom-made by Vivienne Westwood with Perry’s stylist Tatiana Waterford. The dress was made using gold metallic leatherette with draping inspired by a bridal look from the British house’s spring/summer 2006 Gold Label collection. As she sang her 2013 hit single, Roar, to a crowd of thousands, including Princess Charlotte who could be seen singing along in the crowd, her gown shimmered in the darkness.
There’s a lot of contention over the coronation itself. But one thing we can all agree on is that Perry served.
