Kate Middleton and her husband, Prince William, have embarked on a short tour around the United Kingdom to thank key workers on the Covid-19 frontlines, just before the UK settles in for Christmas. In classic Kate style, the tour has been chocked-full of tasteful, discretely chic ensembles—including a series of coats that would make Nicole Kidman’s character in The Undoing (regularly applauded for her own outerwear collection), weep with envy.
This morning the Cambridges arrived in Cardiff, Wales, with Kate wearing a bold red full-length coat by long-time favourite designer Alexander McQueen. The coat covered a tartan skirt, a black turtleneck and knee-high suede boots. The tartan skirt—a long-time favourite of the Duchess, she first wore it back in 2018—is by Emilia Wickstead, the New Zealand-born, UK-based designer who has long decked out the royal family in her tasteful, prim-turned-modern designs.

Yesterday, the Duchess made multiple visits to charitable organisations in Manchester, where she wore a military-style navy coat by the affordable British brand Hobbs (the ‘Bianca’ style, which is currently on sale, quickly sold out after the visit) with a cream wool knit and Simone Rocha pearl and gold drop earrings. That morning, she arrived at Edinburgh station wearing a bold blue Catherine Walker coat with knee-high Ralph Lauren suede boots. Eagle-eyed Kate fans will recognise the coat from the couple’s royal tour of Norway back in 2018, which Kate wore while was pregnant with Prince Louis. The Duchess has long promoted re-wearing seasons-old pieces, a part of her longtime commitment to sustainable dressing.
The day before, the couple kicked off their tour at London’s Euston station, where Kate wore another Alexander McQueen coat dress, this one olive green and tailored, which she partnered with a tartan scarf and her new favourite handbag, a top handle design by the emerging Taiwanese-British designer Grace Han.
As a particularly cold winter begins to set in, Kate’s aspirational coat collection is all the sartorial inspiration we need. Sorry, Nicole.
