To this day the 2002 surf drama Blue Crush is still one of my favourite films. At the time it launched the career of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actresses, Kate Bosworth. In an interview with the Ladies First With Laura Brown podcast, the then 19-year-old was actually struggling behind-the-scenes.

After landing big films such as Win A Date With Tad Hamilton! and Superman Returns, Bosworth has revealed she was experiencing a “really, really hard time.”

“I did not know how to handle that at all,” Bosworth recalled. “And I also did not know how to really communicate through that very well to support systems or to my friends or family.”

“I was losing a lot of weight because I was really under a lot of scrutiny, and I was so stressed and spun out that if you see images of me then, it’s like seeing someone under duress,” she added.

“I felt like I wanted to disappear, I really did.”

In hindsight to her experience, the 38-year-old says she feels for young up-and-coming actresses.  She “cannot imagine” what it’s like for women in the Instagram era which boasts “unattainable, crazy amounts of perfection.” Bosworth did however note that the early naughts were extremely difficult for young stars due to the attention from tabloids for herself and women like Lindsay Lohan.

According to IMDb, Bosworth is in the process of starring in a number of films including The Immaculate Room, The Enforcer and Along for the Ride. Her last role was in the 2021 release of Wild Indian.

Bosworth also appeared on the cover of GRAZIA USA where she spoke on her mental health and mindfulness platform, Kind.est, which she launched in April 2020.

“Sometimes I feel like I’m thinking of so many different things that I miss the moment,” she said. “I didn’t realise how much that was happening until I started to really dig into mindfulness.”
