Is this the second (reinvented) coming of the fantasy bra?
As an arctic chill wreathed London on Monday night, many celebrities braved the cold as they stepped out at the British Fashion Awards at the Royal Albert Hall. One of them was Kaia Gerber who wore a US $1250 (AUD $1800) Loewe black pearl-embellished crop and sheer lace skirt.
Despite the sub-zero temperatures, the sartorial choice was an ironic one – at least for American media who were today celebrating one year since the Victoria’s Secret Show aired on national television. It has since been cancelled. Mega media outlet E! News led the celebratory conversation by posting a series of celebrities and their body positive quotes. “The #VSShow was cancelled for this year but we’re still highlighting strong bodies,” the new juggernaut captioned an image. “Fill in the blanks: I may not love my ____, but I accept my _____.”
If Gerber’s Loewe – along with Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty offerings – are the new fantasy bras, we’re pretty happy about it. For years, the fantasy bra has been the antiquated lingerie brand’s highest honour: If you got to walk it down the glitter-strewn runway in the sparkliest push-up, you’d earned a sort of valedictorian status – in the land of winged models, anyway. Last year, Elsa Hosk walked a $2 million (AUD $2.9 million) Swarovski diamond-encrusted bra down the runway on New York’s Upper West Side. We were on the ground that year and while the show was a spectacle, it was admittedly teetering on the edge cringe – and was jarring and anachronistic. Other models to have worn the fantasy included Claudia Schiffer, Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio.
Unfortunately the brand didn’t move with the times and while the US women’s underwear sector is worth a cool $13.1 billion (AUD $19.2 billion according to Forbes), everybody wants an inclusive lingerie line – and a CMO who will happily send plus size and transgenders down the runway. VS’s Ed Razek wasn’t that man.
We’ll keep you posted on when Gerber’s Loewe (read: the new fantasy) is available.
