It’s true, the nineties and early noughts really nailed the romantic comedy genre. A young Jennifer Lopez could be partly to thank for that era with appearances in The Wedding Planner and Maid in Manhattan. Now the singer and actress has joined Owen Wilson for Marry Me, a story of two strangers who spark an unlikely romance.
The trailer dropped overnight with the film slated to hit theatres just in time for Valentine’s Day in 2022.
According to the official synopsis: “Kat Valdez (Lopez) is half of the sexiest celebrity power couple on Earth with hot new music supernova Bastian (Maluma, making his feature-film debut). As Kat and Bastian’s inescapable hit single, “Marry Me,” climbs the charts, they are about to be wed before an audience of their fans in a ceremony that will streamed across multiple platforms.
“Divorced high-school math teacher Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson) has been dragged to the concert by his daughter Lou (Chloe Coleman, HBO’s Big Little Lies) and his best friend (Sarah Silverman). When Kat learns, seconds before the ceremony, that Bastian has cheated on her with her assistant, her life turns left as she has a meltdown on stage, questioning love, truth and loyalty. As her gossamer world falls away, she locks eyes with a stranger—a face in the crowd.”
For fans of Lopez (who also serves as a producer on the new film), the soundtrack is teeming with new music. In line with trailer release, the “On The Floor” star shared the audio to “On My Way”.
Lopez has many cinematic projects in the works. According to her IMDb profile, she will act and produce the likes of Shot Gun wedding which is in post-production, The Mother which is currently being filmed as well as The Godmother and Atlas that are in pre-production. Stay tuned for more on those projects as details arise.
Marry Me will release into Australian cinemas from February 10, 2022. For American viewers, you can watch it a day later on February 11, 2022.
