Jameela Jamil has long used her social media platforms to spread digital activism on mental health and body positivity but after news that Elon Musk had reached a deal to buy Twitter this week, the actress has suddenly quit the platform. In what she dubbed as her last tweet, the actress shared four sweet photos with her puppy Barold alongside a strongly-worded message.

“Ah he got twitter,” she wrote. “I would like this to be my what lies here as my last tweet. Just really *any* excuse to show pics of Barold. I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck. ❤️”

It was revealed on Tuesday that Twitter had accepted Musk’s $44 billion USD offer which will have the platform become a privately held company.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” the Tesla CEO said in a statement. “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans. Twitter has tremendous potential – I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

Prior to the deal and following Musk’s bid earlier this month, Jamil had revealed she would leave if the agreement went ahead. “One good thing about Elon buying twitter is that I will *FINALLY* leave and stop being a complete menace to society on here. So it’s win win for you all really. 😂”

The Good Place actress who identifies as queer has long been outspoken against controversial figures. In 2021, Jamil revealed she almost ended her life due to news presenter Piers Morgan’s “relentless campaign of hatred” towards her.

In an interview with GRAZIA last March, she added, “I really urge young women out there to be careful about what they’re reading, what they’re seeing online, who they’re following and whose words they’re listening to.”
